Handy and mostly adequate
My wife saw and used this camera when a friend brought it to a sporting event. She is an avid candid videographer and loved the inconspicuous size of the unit, the battery life, and the zoom. So she bought it to use on an extended overseas trip to visit extended family members. We have found that it is very suitable for this type of casual use, because if it is attractive to take the (easy to carry and hold) camera, then you are more likely to have it when the opportunity arises. And the shot quality is "good enough" for most purposes.
Considering that my wife has done semiprofessional video work for several organizations and my oldest son works in the media/film industry as a cameraman/editor tech I guess I am satisfied with the SX40 if they are. We have several much more expensive cameras to use when that is needed, but you have to be able to adjust your technology to fit the real need of your situation.
Sony does NOT have a version of their PMB video software for the Mac OS, which seems a bit lame considering the target market of this device. Other than that it works for us. -

Good one for the price
Good one for the price. If one can get a HD camera for a $100 more then I would suggest that.

Sony DCR-SX40 Camcorder
I Love, Love Love the clarity of sound and videos..
I have not learned all the features yet, so enjoy the tiny size, so easy for a woman's hands.
Highly recommend this Camcorder!
